Here is some information on the area around Saint Gervais,
which is in the Vendee region of France
- Saint Gervais is on the West coast of France in Vendee.
- The Vendée is on
the west coast of France, to the south of Brittany. It has
a beautiful coastline with attractive countryside inland.
It is about 3 hours from St Malo and 4 hours from
Cherbourg and Caen
- There are lots of interesting walks
close by along well prepared footpaths. Just over two
miles to Beauvoir for basic local shops and five miles
to Challans for lots of shops, markets with local
produce and supermarkets. The nearest beaches are
between five and eight miles away.
- Within the village of St Gervais, you have everything
that you would want to make your stay as stress free as
possible. There are 2 patisseries, a butcher, post office, church, bar, restaurant, library
and hairdresser. A doctor and pharmacy are also within the
village. There is also a large supermarket 5
minutes away by car which stocks everything that you
might need.
- The house is a 15 minute drive from the lovely coastal town of St Jean-De-Monts
where there is a market every Wednesday and Saturday. The miles of sandy beaches at St Jean-De-monts and Notre
Damme-De-Monts are 12 minutes away - see the photo gallery
for an idea of the beaches. Challans, which is the nearest
large town for shopping is about 10 minutes away
- The
Ile de Nourmoutier
is about 15 minutes drive away. The town and beaches are
very pleasant, and there are some good seafood restaurants.
The aquarium and castle are both worth a visit. Instead of
going on the main road you could try crossing on the
causeway, Le Gois, if you feel brave. The causeway is only
passable at low tide. Times are published in the paper and
are displayed on signs as you approach.
